Mutt Data partnered with Clip’s People team to build a secure, scalable People Data Lake on Databricks. By automating BambooHR report generation, enabling daily updates, and implementing robust data governance, the team drastically reduced manual workloads and gained reliable, time-sensitive insights. Introduction

Clip’s People team is pivotal to enhancing employee experience, engagement, and organizational growth. However, their potential was hindered by manual reporting, fragmented tools, and lack of centralized data. In collaboration with Mutt Data, Clip implemented a secure, automated People Data Lake—increasing trust in data, enabling daily insights, and laying a solid foundation for innovation.

The Challenge

Clip’s People team depended on a manual process to generate HR reports from systems like BambooHR, Eloomi, Slack, and others. These tasks involved downloading reports, merging historical data in Google Sheets, and building dashboards and advanced analytics analyses. The workflow included:

  • Configuring exports via each tool’s UI (BambooHR, Eloomi, etc.)
  • Downloading and combining CSVs with historical files
  • Manually calculating metrics in Google Sheets
  • Using Looker Studio for dashboards

This approach led to:

  • Errors and diminished trust due to inconsistent reporting.
  • Poor scalability, with manual effort increasing as data demands grew.
  • Performance bottlenecks due to limitations in Google Sheets (e.g., memory, cell limits, lack of validation).

To overcome these inefficiencies, Clip engaged Mutt Data to automate operations and develop a secure Data Lake.

The Solution

Mutt Data built a secure, modular, and automated Data Lake tailored to the People team's needs. Hosted on Databricks, the platform adheres to Clip’s enterprise data standards and includes advanced access controls, encryption, and monitoring for unauthorized access. Key outcomes included:

  • Full automation of BambooHR data ingestion and report generation.
  • Daily updates, replacing weekly and monthly manual processes.
  • Consolidated historical data into structured, dashboard-ready tables.
